MIDI Connections

The following are some suggestions on MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) connections between an iPad and a MIDI instrument such as a synthesizer, keyboard, guitar pedal, or software.

Please consult the manual of your MIDI instrument for complete details.


Connecting an iPad to a MIDI Instrument with a USB Cable

  1. Turn your iPad and instrument off
  2. Connect an Apple Camera Connection Kit (Lightning to USB) cable to the iPad
  3. Connect a USB A to B cable from the Camera Connection Kit to the USB MIDI port of the instrument
  4. Turn your iPad and instrument on

Connecting an iPad to a MIDI Instrument with a USB MIDI Interface

  1. Turn your iPad and instrument off
  2. Connect an Apple Camera Connection Kit (Lightning to USB) cable to the iPad
  3. Connect a USB MIDI interface (such as the M-Audio Uno) from the Camera Connection Kit to the MIDI in and out ports of the instrument
  4. Turn your iPad and MIDI instrument on

Connecting an iPad to an Apple Computer

  1. Turn your iPad and computer off
  2. Connect the iPad to the computer using the USB cable supplied with the iPad
  3. Turn your iPad and computer on
  4. Add an aggregate device with the utility Audio MIDI Setup on your computer (this only needs to be done once)
  5. Select the Network Session as the MIDI output port to communicate with the computer
  6. Configure your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and/or software instrument to use the aggregate device

MIDI Issues

Try the following to resolve the issue:

  • Ensure that the MIDI channel of the app and the MIDI instrument match
  • Ensure the connection from the iPad to the MIDI instrument is working
  • Restart the app
  • Restart the iPad and/or your MIDI instrument
